(ANS - Medellín) - Among the many activities for the bicentenary of the birth of Don Bosco, the Salesian Institute of Ciudad Don Bosco Medellin began celebrations on 1 March for the 50th anniversary of its foundation. The celebrations opened with a solemn Mass in the Cathedral, and the work was honoured also with recognition by the Municipal Council. The anniversary celebrations will continue throughout the bicentenary year. The Rector Major, Fr Ángel Fernández Artime, will participate at some stage.
Archbishop Ricardo Tobón Restrepo of Medellin presided at the Eucharist, which was attended by the young people of the Institute. Among those present were the Provincial, Fr John Jairo Gomez Rúa, several Salesians, employees, past pupils, benefactors and members of the Salesian Family. Together with the faithful of the city, they gave thanks for the many years of service on behalf of the most vulnerable, service rendered with joy and hope after the example and teaching of Don Bosco.
At the end of the Mass, the Municipal Council of Medellín conferred on the Institute the gold medal of the Don Juan del Corral Order of Merit for its 50 years of service.
The resolution MDR 2015-005 gives special recognition to the work done by the Institute for children, adolescents and young people in vulnerable situations. The citation reads "To acknowledge the work of the Pious Salesian Society, and in recognition of the fact that this work provides a great contribution to society, for example, in its commitment to provide favourable conditions for the development of all the people." The award was received by Fr Rafael Bejarano, Rector ofCiudad Don Bosco.
