(ANS - Bangui) - "The Salesians continue their service, aware that they are in a risk situation, conscious that people need us at their side to give them hope if they are to get through these endless trials." So says Fr Josep Maria Sabé, Economer of the Vice-Province of Equatorial Tropical Africa (ATE), speaking in Bangui. He speaks also about the progress of the "Spaces of Peace" campaign and gives some statistics on the refugees still cared for in Salesian  houses.

"Spaces of Peace" (Espacios de Paz) is a campaign organized by the Province of Mary Help of Christians in Spain through the NGOs Solidaridad Don Bosco, Vols and Jóvenes y Desarrollo. The campaign operates in the eastern region, trying to bring about reconciliation in the Central African Republic.

The situation in the country remains one of serious instability. The two rebel groups that have brought the country to civil war are in full freedom. In the capital there is some peace, but there are weapons in the houses, and from time to time the situation passes from one of instability to armed violence. There is no rule of law. Police and security forces are non-existent. The Salesians, in complete insecurity, have chosen to maintain their educational activities in order to prevent children from falling into the hands of armed groups, or becoming victims of violence, and with the hope that, when normality is restored, all of them will be educated and will have a future rich in opportunities.

The Salesians in Bangui are risking their lives. The community has suffered threats, theft, violence and fear, but as Fr Sabé says "we all want to be truly on the side of young people, because we love them more than ever. God gives us the strength to be faithful friends of youth, in these times of fear and insecurity. "

Refugees who cannot return to their homes, either because of the insecurity or because their homes have been destroyed, are still being accommodated in the Salesian houses in Bangui.  About 1,300 displaced people are staying in the Salesian House in Damal and another 300 in Galabadja.  With the help of various organizations the Salesians offer assistance to many others suffering from health problems and insecurity, and provide nutrition and protection for the children in the camps.

The institute has 620 students, the professional centre another 300 and the school 750. Of those in school, there are 250 children who are given food, teaching materials and health care when they need it. Cultural events are held every weekend, to prevent the young people wandering around the streets.  About 300 young people take part regularly.

The youth centres are home to young people from all groups, no matter where they come from. The centres create an environment of reconciliation, friendship, acceptance and respect. These youth centres offer good therapy and help to restore balance to the many children who have lost their parents or have witnessed extreme violence. Games, sports, festivals and music are excellent tools to promote joy and hope in the midst of this tragic situation.
