(ANS - Rome) - Yesterday, 18 January, was World Day of Migrants and Refugees. There are many people around the world who have had to leave their country because of conflicts, disasters or lack of employment opportunities. The World Day of Migrants and Refugees invites us to reflect and act on issues such as welcoming, accepting, helping, meeting and dialoguing with migrants and refugees. In this regard, Salesians want to emphasize the search for reconciliation and peace through our common work and commitment.

In an article published on the website of the Salesian Mission Office in Madrid there are some data that shed light on the situation. It is estimated that about 200 million people worldwide live outside the country where they were born. Wars, natural disasters, lack of opportunities ... there are many reasons why people decide to leave their homes in search of a better future for themselves and their loved ones. This is even more true today, in a globalized world. On the occasion of the World Day of Migrants and Refugees it is necessary to launch an appeal to promote a culture of encounter and dialogue.

"The multicultural character of societies today encourages the church to take on new commitments of solidarity, of communion and evangelization. Migrant organizations, in fact, seek to deepen and strengthen the values necessary to ensure harmonious coexistence between people and cultures. To this end, mere tolerance is not enough. We must open the way to respect the diversity and promote sharing between people of different backgrounds and cultures," wrote Francis Pope in his message for the day.

Currently the Salesians are dealing with over 400,000 refugees. They stay close to the people they are working with. Salesian Parishes and Communities have become places of welcome and shelter for thousands of people who fear for their lives.

"We are staying" is always the answer of the Salesians in the face of conflict. “They offer hospitality to refugees in their buildings and help all those people to rebuild their lives. They provide education to the children when they return to school, and work skills to adults, plus emergency aid and accompaniment. They are there for refugees and migrants and for those who suffer.
