(ANS - Rome) - "The classical and Christian humanities, now as in the past, are necessary to form minds that are open in the search for truth and to educate to freedom in the choice of what is good. The values of humanitas are the guarantee of an authentic integral development of the person and the building of a more just society." These were the words of Fr Francesco Cereda, Vicar of the Rector Major, at the Studia Latinitatis provehenda conference.

The conference, held on the occasion of the 50th anniversary of the founding of the Faculty of Christian and Classical Letters at the Salesian Pontifical University,  on 7-8 November, was attended by teachers and students from all over the world, a total of about 300 people.

Major presentations were given in Latin, from Latin scholars of world renown. On Saturday 8 November there were also activities for high school students.

The Faculty of Christian and Classical Letters carries on a work started by Don Bosco and continued by so many Salesians over the years: educating young people to virtues that never go out of fashion, through the works of the ancient Latin and Greek writers that even today have a message of humanity, peace and universal fraternity.
