(ANS - Madrid)- The jury of the Prince of Asturias Peace Award has conferred its 34th award on the Congolese journalist Caddy Adzuba as "a symbol of the peaceful struggle against the violence that affects women." The decision was taken yesterday, 3 September, following their deliberations at the Hotel Reconquista in Oviedo. The World Confederation of the Past Pupils of Don Bosco had nominated the Salesians of Don Bosco for this award in recognition of the celebrations for the bicentenary of its founder.

There were more than forty candidates for the prize, including the Salesians of Don Bosco, along with other personalities and institutions such as the Las Edades del Hombre Foundation, BishopJuan José Aguirre of Bangassou, the people of Angrois,.the Franciscans who guard the Holy Places and the NGO SOS Aldeas Infantiles.

The Salesians of Don Bosco congratulate the Congolese journalist Caddy Adzyba on receiving this important recognition and thank the World Confederation of the Past Pupils of Don Bosco for nominating the Salesians, as well as the educational and religious institutions and  companies, government agencies and the thousands of people who individually expressed their support for the nomination.

Their support and demonstrations of affection encourage the Salesians to continue their work for the education and development of young people, especially the most needy, particularly this year when they are celebrating the bicentenary of Don Bosco’s birth.

The Salesian Congregation is present in over 130 countries.  As the Rector Major pointed out recently at the beginning of the Bicentenary of the birth of Don Bosco, the Salesians are committed to renewing " their mission on behalf of  young people around the world, especially those most in need, the poorest and most vulnerable. We will continue to reach out to young people and to those on the margins of human society."
