(ANS - Madrid) - Thousands of emails and messages are coming to the Prince of Asturias Foundation supporting the request for the award of the "Prince of Asturias Concord 2014" prize to the Salesians. The petition was filed last April by the World Confederation of Salesian Past Pupils. In addition to personal messages of support there were those of the Daughters of Charity and the Messengers of Peace who were Prize winners in this category in 1994 and in 2005.

It is importantto remind the whole Salesian world that this nomination for the Prince of Asturias Award is not just about the Salesians in Spain, but is of a global character and involves the Salesians in the 132 countries where the Salesians of Don Bosco continue their mission.

Among the manyinstitutions that have expressed their support for the Salesian candidacy are the Archbishop of Santiago de Compostela and Oviedo, the Municipalities of Valladolid and Utrera, Non-Governmental Organizations for development such as Nuevos Caminosand AldeasInfantiles SOS, religious and educational institutions such as the Community of San Pablo, the Lasallians of Valladolid and religious of the Third Order of St Francis, the Company of the Blessed Virgin Mary, the NIPACE Foundationand Viday Solidaridad, as well as recreational associations, groups, scouts, sports and cultural associations and companies that collaborate with the Salesians.

Almost15,000 messages of support have already been sent through the website www.change.org alone.

With this request to thePrince of Asturias Foundation to award the prize to the Salesians, the Past Pupils want to give recognition to the dedication of the Salesians to formal and non-formal education of young people, especially those most in need, through schools, vocational training centres, reception centres, youth centres, activities for the social integration and the protection of minorities.

Committed to the development of people through education, the Salesians do great work daily on behalf of young people and the societies in which they work, sometimes in difficult conditions, mobilizing people, resources and institutions at the international level. The network of Salesian NGOs for Development, on the other hand, operates a number of programmes in collaboration with governments, always at the service of the most disadvantaged social groups.
