(ANS - Vatican City )  - The Holy Father has appointed Fr Stefan Oster, SDB, as Bishop of Passau (Germany).  Fr Oster has been until now Professor of Dogma and History of Dogma at the Salesian Institute of Benediktbeuern .

Stefan Oster  was born on 3 June 1965 in Amberg in the diocese of Regensburg. From 1984 to 1986 he trained as a journalist and as a radio- editor, and then worked in this capacity in several newspapers and radio stations. In 1988, he began the study of Philosophy, History and Religious Studies in Regensburg, Kiel, Keele and Oxford in Britain, where in 1993 he was awarded the  degree Master of Studies. In 1994 he received the  Magister Artium in Regensburg.

In 1995 he entered the Congregation of the Salesians of Don Bosco and began the study of theology in Benediktbeuern in 1996. He made his perpetual profession on 24 July 1999 and was ordained priest on 24 June 2001. In 2003 he obtained a Doctorate of Philosophy in the Faculty of Theology of the University of Augsburg. Later, from 2003 to 2009, he was Professor of Philosophy at the Salesian Institute in Benediktbeuern .

In 2009 he obtained a Higher Teaching Diploma in Dogmatic Theology at the Theological Faculty of Trier and was appointed Professor of Dogma and History of Dogma in the Institute in Benediktbeuern. He is a member of the Commission for Vocations of the German Bishops' Conference.
