(ANS – Guwahati) – The Assam Don Bosco University activated its new Local Area Network (LAN) with effect from 6.00 p.m. Friday, 6th September 2013. This LAN now brings the University within the National Knowledge Network (NKN), a project of the ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD), Government of India.
The NKN is a platform for delivering effective distance education where teachers and students can interact in real time. The network enables co-sharing of information such as classroom lectures, presentations and handouts among different institutions. NKN has already connected 781 institutions and aims to connect over 1,500 Institutions / Organizations / Laboratories under various categories throughout the country.
The NKN consists of an ultra-high speed CORE (multiples of 10 Gbps), complemented with a distribution layer at appropriate speeds. The network is designed to support Overlay Networks, Dedicated Networks, and Virtual Networks. Advanced applications in areas such as Health, Education, Science & Technology, Grid Computing, Bio Informatics, Agriculture, and Governance are an integral part of NKN.
“Two years ago, we were one of the first educational establishments in the country to sign a ten year contract for this national knowledge grid” said Vice-Chancellor Dr Stephen Mavely.
Other value added services this LAN can provide include: Moodle (the Learning Management Tool for Aptitude Tests), Spoken Tutorials (learn a number of software programmes free), and ADBU Library OPAC (Online Public Access System),
The Director of ADBU Computer Operations, Mr Vijay Prasad, along with Mr Manoj Das and his team from ADBU Computer Lab, facilitated the painstaking work of implementing the LAN and the switchover.
