(ANS – Recife) – From 4 to 6 August the Salesian Province of North East Brazil (BRE), in collaboration with the Salesian Institute of Philosophy (INSAF), ran a Salesian Education and Communication Forum on ‘The Internet as a place for making sense’.

The initiative was designed to bring together the progress which the Church, the Salesian Congregation and society, especially communicators and educators, are making towards a more critical awareness of the way individuals and social groups relate to each other through means of communication. This goes beyond the definition of norms for using technology and literacy in the new media.

About 70 people took part, including pre-novices and post-novices from the Province. The programme included discussions, workshops, film study and meetings of the communications team.

The first discussion, on 4 August, was on the delicate subject of the difficulty of broadband access in Brazil. It is very expensive and not available to most families. The journalist Pedro Caribé, a promoter of the ‘Broadband is a right’ campaign, and the INSAF lecturer, Afonso Chaves, led the reflections. The Provincial Communications Coordinator and chair of the discussion, Jakeline Lira, explained "In the Preventive System we place great value on the playground and, in modern times, the ‘new playgrounds’. Understanding its importance in the development of society and of young people, we cannot accept the lack of access to broadband in our country, nor fail to reflect on this matter. Access to broadband, considered as a right, is one of the principal requests made by young people during preparations for the II National Youth Conference. We, as Salesians, educators and young people, cannot remain aloof from this discussion."

On 5 August there was a second discussion, also well attended and appreciated, on ‘Communication and Education in the age of cyber-culture’, led by Don Gildásio Mendes, a member of the World Consultative Body for Communication, and by the university lecturer Andrea Trigueiro.

In the afternoon there were five workshops on various matters of interest: teaching and learning in the internet era, use of ICT (Information and Communication Technology); evangelising with the languages and tools of the digital world; sound media in the age of convergence; audiovisual language in the digital era; and strategies for communications and mobilising young people through the internet and new technologies.

The final day of the Forum was dedicated to representatives of the media and guests from Salesian houses who gave accounts of their local situations. There was a presentation of the Salesian System of Social Communications in order to begin the process of drawing up a Province Social Communications Plan. At the same time the prenovices and post novices took part in a study of the film ‘5X favela - Agora por nós mesmos’.

Guilherme Barbosa, Social Communications Delegate in the Belo Horizonte Province (BBH), who came to Recife to take part in the Forum, expressed his appreciation for the initiative. "In addition to formation, the Forum enabled interaction and integration between the participants, especially those involved in Salesian works. In this way we can share the problems we meet in each institution and discuss ideas and solutions in a collaborative way." Fr Gildásio Mendes, from the Campo Grande Province (BCG) was grateful for the atmosphere of participation and hoped that the same initiative could spread to other provinces. "Formation of Salesians and lay people for the new culture of the media is fundamental and necessary."

The blog set up for the Forum will continue to provide resources and information.
