(ANS – Modica) – There have been a large number of events organised to celebrate the anniversary of the death of the Volunteer With Don Bosco (CDB) Nino Baglieri (1951-2007). Those who knew him, especially his family, the CDB of the Italian Group, the Salesian Family in Sicily and the diocese of Noto are awaiting as the necessary time passes to introduce the cause of his beatification and canonisation.

On Saturday 14 May in the Salesian house of Modica, the native town of Nino Baglieri, the Salesian Fr Pippo Ruta introduced a new book about the consecrated Salesian, entitled “Nino Baglieri an all-round picture – God’s athlete from various points of view”. Present at the events were Bishop Giuseppe Malandrino, former bishop of the diocese of Noto, Fr Gianni Mazzali, Provincial of the Salesians in Italy-Sicily, the Mayor  of the city and a large number of people also from neighbouring places.

The book, with two prefaces – one by the Rector Major, Fr Pascual Chávez, the other by the Bishop of the diocese of Noto Bishop Antonio Staglianò – presents Nino Baglieri examining closely the clinical, bioethical, biographical and spiritual, canonical and Salesian aspects, and finally those related to the linguistic-expressive.

Following the presentation of the book there was Mass at which Bishop Malandrino presided and a number of Salesian and diocesan priests concelebrated, and Fr Mazzali gave the homily.

The day of celebrations ended with a performance of the musical “On the wings of love,” which had also been performed for the Rector Major last January on the occasion of the Spirituality Days of the Salesian Family. In the courtyard of the house packed with people, the C.G.S. “Life” with words and music presented a summary of the Christian and Salesian experience of Nino Baglieri, to an emotional response from those present, especially from the many who had known him.

Next year, after the five years required by canon law have passed, it is intended to begin the diocesan process for the cause of the beatification and canonisation of the Volunteer With Don Bosco.
