(ANS – Rome) – The Rector Major and his Council have approved the interventions of the Project for Europe in the two year period 2011-2012. The document, drawn up during the recent III Meeting of the Provincials of Europe, was reviewed and finalised by the Commission for the Project for Europe (PE). The other Provinces and the Salesian Family are asked for their involvement in the fundamental factor:  new evangelisation.

Fr Francesco Cereda, Coordinator of the PE Commission, in presenting the proposals, speaks of the need for a better knowledge of the Project in the Salesian Congregation. “It should be remembered, in  fact, that this is not Project on behalf of Europe, but of a commitment in which Europe has its specific role and in which, however, all the Provinces of the Congregation are involved,” Fr Cereda says, pointing out that “The procedures which are being followed in Europe, in addition to being the application of the GC26 in this area, are also instructive for the other Regions.”

Among the themes of the interventions planned for the next two year period is that of  the new  evangelisation. “The mission in Europe consists in the new evangelisation, and the missionaries who arrive there, together with the European Salesians, are entrusted with this task,” Fr Cereda says. With an invitation to consider the guidelines of the Pontifical Council for the new evangelisation and the next Synod of Bishops of the Universal Church in 2012, he adds: “The time has come for European Salesians and for the Salesian missionaries in Europe to look for new ways to communicate the Christian faith, especially to the young.”

The subjects of the interventions are all Salesians, from the Rector Major to the various Councillors, from the Regions to the Provinces. In particular what is being looked for is active involvement, especially on the part of the non-European Provinces both in the animation of the PE within the Provinces, and in presenting the proposal to missionary candidates. Salesian missionaries in Europe at present number more than fifty.

An important strategy for this next period is the involvment of the various groups of the Salesian Family.

In the Commission for the Project for Europe the place of the Provincial of Krakow, Fr Marek Chrzan who is now the Regional Councillor for North Europe, has been taken by the Provincial of Croatia, Fr Ivan Marianovic. The next meeting will take place at the end of July 2011 at Santiago di Compostella in Spain.

The IV Meeting of the Provincials of Europe will be held in Rome between 30 November and  2 December 2012, and it will be enlarged with the participation of some Provincials from other Regions of the Congregation and another member from the Salesian Family.

The texts of the Programme of Interventions for the Project for Europe for the years  2011-2012 and their presentation by Fr Cereda are available on the appropriate section of sdb.org.
