India – A global climate change for a better environment |
Belgium –Don Bosco International participating in "The Europe Experience" |
(ANS - Brussels) - On 4 June 2014, during EU Green Week in Brussels, Don Bosco International participated in the meeting on Green Jobs and Skills.
The purpose of the meetingwasto assess how the green economy is reshaping the world of work and the demand for skills. Similarly it sought to analyze how educational policies and employment can respond more quickly, efficiently and equitably towards a circular model of economy.
There are twopositions in the current debate: some defend the idea that a greener economy has huge potential in creating jobs. Its proponents believe that it is essential to ensure smart, sustainable and inclusive growth. Others are concerned about the risk of a transfer of the production chain to countries where less attention is paid to the environment.
Undoubtedly, climate change and environmental degradation are threatening the livelihood and future sustainability in many areas of economic activity around the world. On the other hand, the shift in recent years towards a low-carbon economy and sustainable growth has been well documented.
The new EU strategyfor sustainable development and employment in the context of the objectives for Europe 2020 puts innovation and green growth at the heart of its project for competitiveness. In Germany, the integration of environmental aspects has strongly influenced the education system. Environmental protection has been included both in vocational training colleges and in universities. Some regions of Spain, including Extremadura and Navarra, have been active in identifying the skills for new and old professions.
During the meeting, the speakers agreed in supporting the need to provide educational infrastructure and integrated strategies to anticipate the necessary industrial changes and reduce the social impact of these changes, and to prepare young people and provide updating for workers.
In this context, there may well be opportunities for young people, especially the poorest among them.
