(ANS - Rome) - Yesterday, 19 December, the Rector Major, Fr Pascual Chávez Villanueva, after consultation with his Council, appointed Fr Asídio Deretti as Superior of the Saint Pius X Province in Porto Alegre, Brazil, for the six years from 2014 to 2019.
Asídio Deretti was born in Luiz Alves (now Massaranduba) on 7 November 1945. He made his first profession as a Salesian on 31 January 1965and was ordained priest on 1 January 1975. He chose as his priestly motto: "The truth will set you free"(Jn 8, 32). He holds degrees in Philosophy, Geography, History and Theology and specialized in the Theology of Spiritual Life at the Salesian Pontifical University in Rome.
He was Rector of several communities (Guarapuava, Massaranduba, Curitiba, Viamão and the Provincial House in Porto Alegre), as well as Economer in Curitiba and Parish Priest in Massaranduba. He has also been Provincial Delegate for Formation, Delegate for the Volunteers of Don Bosco and for Vocations Ministry, and is currently Delegate for Youth Ministry.
He will attend the 27th General Chapter as an observer and will assume his new position on 24 May, the Feast of Mary Help of Christians, in the parish dedicated to Don Bosco in Porto Alegre.
