(ANS – Žilina) – Between 7 and 10 July in the Salesian house in Žilina, Slovakia, there was the first “MeStival – International Media Festival”. The event brought to a conclusion the first bi-annual cycle of the “Media School,” and edu-communication project planned and organised by the Salesian Family in Slovakia and the Czech Republic. During the weekend the jury of experts studied and enjoyed the work of the young authors from Salesian centres in the two countries.

“The young people were able to present what they had learned during the four courses of the Media School in the areas of text, photographs and videos. In addition during the MeStival those taking part were divided into groups led by an expert and then worked on some social topics with articles short videos or photos” explained the Salesian Fr Pavol Dzivy, a member of the “Co-media Team”, responsible for the Media Scuola and for MeStival.

“The media and young people go hand in hand. We wanted to give the young people the chance to develop their own talents,” said the Coordinator of the Media School Project, Viktoria Kolcakova, one of the leaders who had a degree in journalism.

The young people liked the way they worked at the MeStival, especially the presence of the professionals who gave them their full attention. “I learned the basics of working with the telecamera and I improved my skills as a photographer,” Barbara Krizova one of the young people involved, said who had come from Ostrava, in the Czech Republic.

The culmination of the Mestival was the Gala Evening on Saturday 9 July attended also by the Provincial of the Salesians in Slovakia, Fr Karol Manik and the Slovak Member of the European Parliament  the Hon. Miroslav Mikolasik who was also Patron of the MeStival. “I often say something at the European Parliament which the Media then report differently. This is a pity. You are seeking the truth,” he said at the opening of the evening, “and this pleases me very much.”

The Gala Prize went to a short video “With the angels with high heels,” about a volunteer nurse in Africa. The video was introduced by Daniela Masiarova a girl from the centre of the Daughters of Mary Help of Christians in Dolny Kubin, Slovakia. The overall winner of the MeStival was Michal Smolen, 20 years of age with his short science fiction film “Mine”.

During the MeStival Mass was said each day, accompanied by an international choir consisting in some of those taking part. The young people were also very interested in a talk given by Fr Laco Miko a Slovak Salesian about his experience as a missionary in Pakistan.

The courses of the Media School have been thought up and produced by the “Co-media Team” consisting in members of the Salesian Family from the two countries. This edu-communication Project is also supported by the SlovakAid Agency.
