(ANS - Cartagena) – To celebrate the 125th anniversary of the launch of the submarine designed by the military engineer Isaac Peral, the Institute for Cultural Heritage of Spain (EICP ) and the Naval Museum of Cartagena planned the restoration of the submarine. Students and teachers of the Salesian centre of Cartagena took part in the project.
The elements reconstructed, in absolute fidelity to the original plans, included horizontal rudders (2 pieces), the dome of the compass, a sliding door (used to measure the speed of navigation), two fans (to ventilate the interior of the ship) and some brackets that supported the bridges (16 units).
Teachers and high school students from the course for welders and trainees in metalwork and plastic technology joined in the work, under the guidance of Mr. Eduardo Chacón, head of the Department for welding and heating engineering.
On September 12, the historic submarine Peral, completely restored, was presented during a solemn ceremony attended by some of the staff of the Salesian centre, various military authorities and the Prince of Asturias, Felipe de Bourbon.
