China – With the young and for the young |
(ANS – Hong Kong) – Inspired by the famous “Nobel Prizes”, the Salesian Family in the Chinese Province recently set up the “Don Bosco Prize” for students from Salesian secondary schools.
To commemorate the pilgrimage of the relics of Don Bosco in China and the 150th anniversary of the founding of the Salesian Society and in view of the bicentenary of Don Bosco’s birth, the Salesian Province of China, in collaboration with the Louis Leung Educational Foundation established the Don Bosco Prize, which will be awarded each year to the best students in the secondary schools of the Salesian Family in Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan. The aim is to preserve and perpetuate the loving concern Don Bosco had for the young and to encourage the students to imitate his spirit of selfless service.
This year each Salesian Family High School proposed its three best students who were considered to be excellent not only in their academic studies and conduct, but also in their spirit of service as they tried to imitate Don Bosco, in his virtue and in his charism.
From the 30 plus students proposed 5 were chosen and they each received the “Don Bosco Prize” They will also receive scholarships from the Louis Leung Educational Foundation and a certificate signed personally by the Rector Major, Fr Pascual Chávez Villanueva.
This year the Don Bosco Prize was presented to the students on 16 August during a Festive Evening Meal in honour of Sam-Ioi Carlos Cheung, a cleric who made his perpetual vows and the various Salesians who were celebrating anniversaries of profession and of the priesthood. The recipients of the Prizes were overjoyed to receive this recognition. The Rector Major and Mr Louis Leung expressed the hope that the Don Bosco Prize might be an encouragement for the whole East Asia -Oceania Region.
