Germany – German language course for Salesians of Don Bosco |
Germany – Knowing Don Rua better |
In the course of the years, the Monastery of Benediktbeuern, entrusted to the Salesians in 1931, has always been of major importance in Salesian and theological formation for the German-speaking Provinces, and not only these. In fact there are not a few Salesians from other countries who have completed their theological preparation in this centre.
Close collaboration was established between the Benediktbeuern Department, founded in 1971, and the Catholic Atheneum for Social Pedagogy at Munich which became known as the “Benediktbeuern model,” with an academic course with a diploma in theology and social work. Many former students of this faculty are nowadays qualified collaborators in the German church engaged for the most part in the charity area and in youth ministry.
In recent years attempts have been made to collaborate with the Bavarian Bishops, but the vocation situation and the lack of financial resourses have led the Provincial Fr Josef Grunner and his Council to decide to close the Faculty of Catholic Theology.
In collaboration with the German church, and especially with the Bavarian dioceses, the Salesians want to retain the Monastery of Benediktbeuern as a place for the formation of young people coming from German-speaking countries in pedagogy and youth ministry and for foreigners in the German language.
