Vatican – Fr Mauro Morfino appointed Bishop of Alghero-Bosa |
On Sunday afternoon 3 April a large reproduction of the High Altar of Alghero Cathedral formed the background for the ordination ceremony of Bishop Mauro Maria Morfino appointed by the Pope on 31 January the Bishop of the Diocese of Alghero-Bosa. The whole Church of Sardinia with all the Bishops were joined by other prelates from various parts of the world such as the archbishop of Barcelona, Cardinal Lluis Martinez Sistach, representing the ten dioceses of Catalonia as well as the Bishop emeritus of Alghero Bishop Antonio Vacca.
Cardinal Tarcisio Bertone presided accompanied by the Metropolitan archbishop of Sassari, Paolo Mario Virgilio Atzei, O.F.M. Conv., and by the Nuncio Apostolic in Georgia, Armenia and Azerbaijan , archbishop Claudio Gugerotti. Among others present were the Salesians Archbishop Calogero La Piana, of Messina-Lipari-Santa Lucia del Mela, Bishop Enrico dal Covolo, Rector of the Pontifical Lateran University and Fr Pier Fausto Frisoli, Councillor for the Italy Middle East Region.
235 volunteers wearing orange coloured waistcoats on which was written the motto “in amicitia et in verbo”, chosen by Bishop Morfino for his ministry, welcomed the 10,000 or so congregation of whom 6,000 were inside the marquee erected in Peace Square. It was the first episcopal ordination in Alghero for a least three centuries.
