22/11/2010 - Chile - Archbishop Ezzati elected President of the CECh

(ANS – Valparaiso) – The Archbishop of Concepción, Mons. Ricardo Ezzati Andrello SDB was been elected President of the Bishops’ Conference of Chile (CECh) on Friday 19 November, at the end of the Plenary Assembly for the three year period 2010-2012. His predecessor Bishop Alejandro Goic Karmelic of Rancagua, who held the office for two terms was elected Vice-President.

Two other Salesians were involved in the process of the renewal of the various roles: Bishop Héctor Vargas of Arica, as a member of the Pastoral Commission, and Bishop Bernardo Bastres of Punta Arenas, as a member of the Conference of Religious Men and Women in Chile (CONFERRE).

Archbishop Ezzati, involved in the front line for the defence of human rights was elected in July 2007 President of the Commission for Education and Culture of the Latin-American Bishops’ Conference (CELAM). On 31 December 2009 the Chilean newspaper “El Sur” named Archbishop Ricardo Ezzati “Person of the Year” in the category of “Personages in the Country”. He was also one of the Bishops appointed by Benedict XVI to conduct an enquiry into the Legionaries of Christ following the problems associated with the founder  Fr Marcial Maciel.
