(ANS – Kakuma) – On 7 September Dr. Antonio Guterres, the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees, paid a visit to the Don Bosco centre in Kakuma. He was accompanied by Dr. Antonio Mexia, Executive Director of “Energias de Portugal” (EDP), the Minister of Labour, the Undersecretary of the Ministry of Immigration and many other dignitaries from the UN and the Kenyan Government. The occasion was the inauguration of the EDP solar project at the Salesian centre.

The Staff and students of the Don Bosco Technical School Kakuma also took an  active part in the project. They provided the technical support in the fabrication and installation of the frames to support the solar panels, the solar panels themselves and  the installation of  street lights in the camp. It was a great learning experience for them as well.

During the visit, in which the Provincial of the Salesians in East Africa  Fr Joseph Pulikkal also took part, Dr. Mexia, as well as the High Commissioner Dr Antonio Guterres, publicly expressed their appreciation for the quality of the collaboration of the Salesians. Dr. Guterres, in particular, expressed words of praise for the Salesian community, not only for the work being done in Kenya, but also elsewhere: “ “I want to thank the community of the Salesians of Don Bosco because it is doing so much not only here, but everywhere in the world. I know your work even in my country of Portugal. I could see how important your work was in East Timor, the country that emerged to a large extent from its trials through your efforts.”

“And what you are doing here in Kakuma,” the UNO High Commissioner continued, “This is not the first time that I have had the occasion to see the excellence of your educative work in support of the people, and what you are doing here is absolutely remarkable!! I can’t see how this project could in any way have been possible without you, and I don’t think that all our work for the protection of refugees would be possible without your presence in this camp. So, I just want to say “Thank you very much”. “Karibu Sana”. And he concluded: “May God help you to continue, always with the same energy and the same courage.”
