Mexico – Day of Celebration at the Salesian University |
Led by Fr Miguel Agustín Aguilar Medina SDB and Sr. Beatriz Muñóz FMA the two Provincials, the groups of the Salesian Family from the south of Mexico gathered at the Glorieta de Peralvillo and moved off on their pilgrimage in the early hours of the morning. The procession of religious, lay people, young adults and youngsters who had come from Alborada, Mérida, Yucatán, Morelia and Queretaro, went on their way to the large Basilica expressing their faith in Mary with hymns, music, saying the rosary and with traditional dances.
Having arrived at the large square in front of the Basilica, two young people led the pilgrims in their preparations for the Mass at which the Provincial Fr Aguilar Medina presided. Referring to the image of the vine in the gospel, the Provincial encouraged everyone to live the Family Spirit of the Salesian charism and to follow Jesus, as did Don Bosco in being at the service of the young.
During the Mass the health crisis in Mexico two years before, which had been caused by the AH1N1 virus – and produced a collapse of the Mexican economy leading to unemployment and an increase in poverty – was remembered among the prayers offered for those most in need.
Within the context of the pilgrimage, in front of the Provincial, about 120 boys and girls who are altar servers in the churches, parishes, institutes and oratories in the Salesian centres, renewed their promise to serve Christ and to imitate the faithfulness of Dominic Savio. This was made possible by the efforts of the Salesian Youth Ministry Team and Fr Paulo Armando Morales Gutiérrez, responsible for the area of vocations in the MEM.
