(ANS – Bangkok) – Fr Charles Velardo, Director of the Pakkred “Skills Development Centre for the Blind” has received a new award recognising the great contribution he has made over the years to the betterment of the quality of life of the disabled of Thailand.

The award, “Outstanding Person in the Field of Disability” was presented to Fr Velardo, a longtime Italian Salesian missionary in Thailand for guiding the Pakkred Centre so energetically and creatively over the years. In July 2006 Fr Velardo was given the “Gold Medal of the Most Admirable Order of the Direkgunabhnor.”

There was some delay initially until a number of political matters were sorted out in Thailand, which has had some political problems in the past year.

The nomination of Fr Velardo, only the third person to receive this award, was forwarded to the Commission for Youth, Women, Elders and Disabled, in the Legislative Assembly, and the Commission accepted it. The ceremony initially planned for December was held on 18 January.
