26/8/2015 - Italy - Laigueglia, Anniversary of the Mass celebrated by Don Bosco

(ANS – Laigueglia) –Yesterday, August 25th, in Laigueglia, at the Sanctuary of “Nostra Signora delle Penne” (Our Lady of the Rock), at Cape Mele, Saint John Bosco was remembered who, on August 25th 1885, went there on a pilgrimage and celebrated the Holy Mass exactly in the small church, sheer down to the sea.

Enraptured by this mystical experience, Don Bosco wanted to return there the following year, towards the end of August, for a period of spiritual retreat. In the cashbook of the Sanctuary that is kept at the Diocesan Archive, the local farmers registered the important event and the relevant offering of 50 cents made to the Sanctuary. In the saint’s biographies there is no record of other episodes in which Don Bosco, in his youth, gave a gift of money.

The happy event, in the Bicentenary of the birth of the saint of the youth, was remembered with a Mass at 18.00 hours at the same altar where Saint. Jonh Bosco celebrated.

The Eucharist was presided over by Salesian Fr. Giulivo Torri, Rector of the “Lady of Angels” Church of the Salesian Institute in Alassio, the first house founded by Don Bosco outside Piedmont. The concelebrant was Fr. Faletti, a 98 year-old Salesian priest from Turin, who in 1929, on the occasion of Don Bosco’s beatification, witnessed the transfer of his body to the Basilica of Mary Help of Christians.
