7/7/2015 - Papua New Guinea - Prince Andrew visits Don Bosco Technological Institute

(ANS – Port Moresby) – Don Bosco Technological Institute, East Boroko, a suburb of Port Moresby, was privileged and honoured to be visited by His Royal Highness, The Duke of York, Prince Andrew, KG on the 3rd of July, 2015.

Prince Andrew was welcomed by Fr. Peter Baquero SDB PNG-SI Delegate, Fr. Louie Castaneda SDB, Rector, Fr. Ariel Macatangay SDB, Principal and the whole Educative Pastoral Community of Don Bosco Technical Institute, Boroko, Papua New Guinea.  Minister for Sports and Moresby South MP Hon. Justin Tkatchenko, representatives from the National Department of Higher Education Research Science and Technology (DHERST) and representatives from the media joined His Royal Highness in visiting the institute’s library, lecture rooms and a host of well-maintained workshops.  The visit culminated in the unveiling of the commemorative plaque in the quadrangle.  

Prince Andrew interacted with students during their practical work in the Electrical, Computer, Motor and Machine Fitting workshops. He was delighted to speak to them about their work.  At the short felicitation program, Fr. Peter on behalf of DBTI, thanked his Royal Highness for his visit and presented him a book and a plaque about St. John Bosco, the founder of the Salesians of Don Bosco.  His Royal Highness graciously accepted them and in turn expressed his gratitude.

In his speech he stressed the importance of Technical Education relating it to his own life experience in the Royal Navy.  “I am privileged to see the outstanding job that you students are doing here at Don Bosco. The Technical Education you receive here, will give you knowledge and skills to contribute towards a prosperous economy.  I wish you success in your student life” said Prince Andrew.  He then unveiled the commemorative plaque while the entire student body applauded enthusiastically.

In the morning he visited the Bomana War cemetery and paid his respects to the heroes of World War II.  The Duke of York is in Papua New Guinea as the official guest of honour for the opening of the XV South Pacific Games.
