(ANS - Palermo)- With the help of many benefactors, the Salesians have set up a reception centre for the many foreign children who come to Italy looking for a better life.

The latest data on unaccompanied minors reveal a dramatic situation. The most recent official figures show that in September 2014 more than 12,000 minors entered Italy. Of these, 3000 have disappeared. Needless to say, with the landings this summer, the situation is definitely worse and it now looks like a real emergency.

They are mainly young people aged between 14 and 17. They come from Egypt, Eritrea, countries in sub-Saharan Africa and Syria, all areas affected by conflicts, humanitarian emergencies or situations of severe insecurity. Many of them disappear after arriving in Italy leaving no trace of their whereabouts and are at risk of falling into the hands of criminals.

The Salesians have decided to renovate their reception centre to respond to this emergency with the creation of a structure for first contact. This is a new service available to unaccompanied migrant minors.

They have opened two new sections within the existing building. They meet the criteria required for accreditation for the reception of unaccompanied minors in the Region of Sicily. The additions include an extra bedroom and an additional bathroom, and also a new bathroom for staff. They have also added a living room and balcony as a communal area to encourage sharing and relaxation.      All the fittings and interior doors of the premises have been replaced and new furniture acquired – a television set, DVD player, computer, cookware and plates. At present the house can accommodate up to twelve young people.

The centre offers an immediate welcome and a safe place for the protection of unaccompanied foreign children. It is prepared to offer accommodation for as long as necessary to find a more permanent suitable solution for each young person.

The new structure offers accommodation but also all the educational initiatives needed to enable the young person to acquire knowledge of a linguistic, legal, administrative nature to help them to begin a new life in Italy.
