(ANS – Tonj) – Yesterday morning, 18 February, the Rector Major left Juba by plane for Tonj.  He had a chance to see the African Savanna as he flew with an entourage of nine other people in the specially chartered plane.

As the plane touched down beautiful melodies came from the Don Bosco Brass Band of Tonj Salesian Mission. The Rector, Fr John Peter, was there waiting along with the members of the Salesian Family (FMA, MSMHC) and the Kakamega Sisters of Mary. The youth and the children of our schools gave a rousing welcome with songs and dances. He was also greeted by the Minister of Information His Exc Paul Dhel Gum, a Salesian Past Pupil from Wau.

The Rector Major had an opportunity to bless the John Lee Memorial Hospital constructed by Tonj Project Onlus, an initiative taken by Fr John Lee and Fr Omar Delasa. This was followed by the Ash Wednesday Mass and distribution of Ashes, well organized by the Parish and young people. During his homily the Rector Major expressed his joy and encouraged the youth, children and the parishioners to continue to carry the flame of hope to a bright future in order to create a society that is more humane and just.

Fr Á.F. Artime and Fr Horacio did not show any signs of fatigue, even though they were after a long journey and drained by the heat of 40 degrees. He had some fraternal moments in the residence of the Salesian Sisters and the Missionary Sisters of Mary Help of Christians. The evening visit to Laicok, a leper village, was very significant – here Fr Angel came in direct contact with the real poor. He spent quality time with the leper community and their children and had the joy of blessing the construction of the Primary School for these unfortunate Children. His closeness and affection for the little children was very touching.

In his Good Night to the Salesian Family he expressed his appreciation and love for the Salesian Mission and its special predilection for the poor. The Rector Major encouraged the Salesians and all the members of the Salesian family and marvelled at the great family spirit that exists among them. He also had a very special family encounter with the confreres of the community, expressing his love, affection and acknowledging all the attention, sacrifices and hard work done in the mission despite difficulties and hardships.
