(ANS - Roanne) - "Now we look at poverty in a different way," says Clement, one of the three high school students from the Salesian School at Ressins on his return from a 15 day trip to Madagascar. The young people spent a long time preparing for the initiative, which was supported by the Amitié Marhabata Association. For these students it was a real initiation to development issues.

Océane Jaffre , Marie-Elise Cottin and Clement Vollot were the three students who spent their holidays in Madagascar in February. "It was not a cultural exchange , let alone a tourist trip. We went on a reconnaissance mission to see what help we could give over the next few years," says the leader of the group, Bro. Alain Perrot, SDB.

“We brought a small team. This is a local project of limited scope. We could not bring a big number of students. This might have aroused exaggerated expectations in the local people. Tickets for the journey were sponsored. The advantage of starting with a small number emerged later.”

"In our meetings the young people seemed shy,” says Océane.  “If there had been more of us, we would not have had the same relationship. With a small number it is easier to hear what people have to say. You are almost forced to make a move towards others. "

During the trip the group had two key meetings.  One was with Monique Mougenot, head of an organization that takes care of orphans. She was able to provide many useful tips and practical information on the local situation.  The other was with Father Justin of Caritas, a body engaged in human development.  He was able to help and  assist us in our mission, facilitating contacts and helping in the tasks we want to accomplish.

Three days after their arrival the students visited young farmers' organizations in the villages within a radius of 20 km from Antsirabe.     "The welcome was warm, with songs and prayers, but also with corn cooked in zebu milk for refreshment. They talked about their daily lives and opened their homes to us," they say.

Moved by this reception, the group decided unanimously to allocate €800 to two farmers' organizations, for the purchase of two zebu, a plough and some agricultural equipment.  They also came to an agreement to donate another €1,200  next year.

The studentsare now back in France and they are different because of their experience. "We understand that we need to listen before we act. We need to be present on the spot and in contact with the people  to avoid making mistakes.  We are talking about collaboration ( ... ).I learned what compassion is (...) I changed my perspective on many issues . "
